Obama... Stop being nice!

Does anyone think that the POTUS' charm offensive on the Hill is doing any good at all?

I didn't think so. I'll give it to the President, he tried... he really tried to bring in Republicans during this debate on the stimulus package, but let's face it... they're still stuck on the worn, old mantra "tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts". Now, certainly the lower middle class could use a break in the payroll taxes, but I think we all know that when a Republican throws out the tax cut idea, it's to the same "friends" that have already benefited the last 8 years. You remember, let rich folk keep more of their money and they'll "trickle it down" to the rest of us.

Yeah. That never worked. Because, you see, at a certain point, I really don't think it's even seen as money anymore. It's just a number. And that number (the net worth of the individual) becomes about being larger than the guy next door, not about using that money to improve lives. It's about ego.

The President needs to accept the fact that the Republicans on the Hill want him to fail. It's their only chance for some recovery for the GOP in 2010, and they know this.

It seems that President Obama has picked up on this:

(from New York Times)

“I’m happy to get good ideas from across the political spectrum, from Democrats and Republicans,” he said at the Monday night news conference. “What I won’t do is return to the failed theories of the last eight years that got us into this fix in the first place, because those theories have been tested and they have failed. And that’s part of what the election in November was all about.”  - President Obama

He's right. He was given a mandate to try something new and he needs to accept that the GOP has nothing to offer but the same old crap. Time to stand up, show some spine, and call them out for their failed policies that they are still harping on. Apparently, they've gotten the idea that "meeting them halfway" means to do everything they say.

They need to get used to the fact that they LOST. They aren't calling the shots anymore. Hopefully, if they cannot be more conciliatory, in 2010 they'll lose more seats and we won't have to worry about their filibuster threats anymore. That might be what they need to really rebuild the GOP into a "loyal opposition" rather than being pig-headed while America continues to its perilous slide into depression.

And, really, do the GOP not even realize how much credibility they've lost?!

(from New York Times)

“It’s a little hard for me to take criticism from folks about this recovery package after they presided over a doubling of the national debt,” he said at the news conference. “I’m not sure they have a lot of credibility when it comes to fiscal responsibility.”  - President Obama

Amen and sell it, Brother!
