Best Of / Worst Of Character Moments: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Today we’re going to take a look at Season 8’s Issue 39. The mystically brainwashed Angel is now firmly under Twilight’s control with the goal being ensuring that The Seed is transported to its new home, and leaving Earth to itself with the demon invasion.
Our Main Players: Buffy, Spike, Willow, Xander, and Giles
Our Characters Show Their Mettle:
Buffy- Buffy is getting a huge KUDO from me for attacking the base of the problem and resolving this once and for all. We’ll get all kinds of reasoning for why this was the worst possible thing she could do, ultimately, I know. But here and now? I still maintain that she did the right thing to stop the Scooby Gang’s inevitable loss.
Spike- I’ve no kudo to give to Spike.
Willow- Willow’s Seed-Fu is a sight to behold and she earns a Half-KUDO.
Xander- I’ve nothing to give to Xan.
Rupert- Rupert pulls out some sweet moves on the demons as he’s going after retrieving the Scythe from Faith but more, he also rallies the “Home Demons” against the interdimensional invaders - putting the side by side with their traditional enemies, the Slayers. Big KUDO
A big KUDO goes to the BugCrew for the big save of Spike’s life.
Twi-Angel gets an Anti-KUDO for understanding where Buffy’s strength lies and taking out one of her most trusted and valued people. [Of course, Twilight doesn’t understand just how she’s likely to react to that, and fucks up royally.]
Our Characters Are Weak:
Buffy: I don’t have a demerit to lay on Buffy.
Spike: Spike vs. Twi-Angel. I appreciate the grand gesture, but really? Not smart. I get the impulse, but this battle was too important for gestures that waste resources, and Spike's fighting know-how and vampire strength were resources not to be wasted. Half-DEMERIT
Willow: Wills has been so focused on her link with the wonder of The Seed that she continues to allow herself to bask in the power, rather than actually working the central problem. Half-DEMERIT
Xander: Nothing negative against our Scooby.
Giles: I’ve nothing to issue a demerit over.
Amy and Warren receive a DEMERIT for skipping out on the largest, most important battle of Earth’s existence. The stakes were too high for them to wander off and have lunch and wine.
